In most waters, bicarbonate salts form part of the total water hardness. These bicarbonate salts make up the carbonate hardness (KH) value.
Bicarbonates have an important function in the overall chemistry of aquarium water. They act as a pH buffer, preventing sudden and potentially harmful changes in the acidity or basicity of the water. Where bicarbonates are deficient (i.e., a low KH value), the release of acidic substances from the natural decomposition of organic material can cause a dangerous reduction in the pH of the water. The higher the KH the better the pH buffering, but a very high value can result in the water becoming highly basic. Favorable levels of carbonate hardness are between 3° AND 10° dH (degrees of German hardness). The Tetratest® KH kit was professionally developed to accurately determine the carbonate hardness of your aquarium water.

Carbonate Hardness (aka - Alkalinity, Buffering Capacity):
Alkalinity or Carbonate Hardness (KH) is a measure of the buffering capacity of water, or its ability to resist change in pH. Aquariums or Ponds where alkalinity is allowed to drop too long or too low can often suffer a situation where the pH then “crashes” to levels below 5.0 - leading to very inefficient or total loss of biological filtration and direct irritation or stress on some fish species.
Although commercial chemical buffers are available, natural water relies primarily on a carbonate-bicarbonate buffer system, hence the name hobby use of “carbonate hardness”. Favorable levels of carbonate hardness are between 3° and 10° dH. This kit contains one 10-ml test reagent, a test vial and instructions and recommendations.

Nitrate is the end product of biological filtration and the result of decomposition of nitrite. It can also be present in tap water supplies, especially in areas of high fertilizer run-off. Although virtually non-toxic to fish, nitrate is a key algae nutrient and high concentrations can harm your fish.
Nitrate testing is also an indicator of general water quality and filter function; as biological filtration converts ammonia to nitrite and finally to nitrate, other important chemical changes take place in the aquarium and pond. These changes can include the loss of alkalinity (buffering capacity) or the accumulation of phosphate - thus nitrate testing can indicate possible imbalances in other areas without directly testing each one.

Oxygen is vital for all organisms living in your aquarium or pond. Fish, plants, and microorganisms all require oxygen for respiration. Low oxygen concentrations can cause fish to be increasingly susceptible to disease and cause biological filtration bacteria to work inefficiently.
The oxygen concentration in the water of your aquarium or pond is dependent on a number of factors including; temperature (oxygen concentration decreases as temperature increases especially above 80°F), overstocking, heavy amounts of decaying organic matter, and poor circulation or surface films that interfere with natural gas exchange.
